Industry Day – TIMU Fort Caroline Memorial

Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve protects the natural ecology of over 46,000 acres of lands and waters and over 6,000 years of human history along the St. Johns and Nassau rivers in northeast Florida.

In September 2022, Hurricane Ian, a category 3 storm, made landfall at Fort Caroline damaging the existing site. Due to these damages, the park is now unable to protect the natural ecology of land and water successfully along with the 6,000 years of human history.

A&E Designs are currently underway via National Park Service A&E Task Order 140PS126F0056, awarded to Houser Walker Architecture LLC, in FY26. The resulting designs will be followed up with a Construction Contract to repair damages that occurred because of Hurricane Ian as well as provide mitigation measures to protect the Fort Caroline exhibit from future storm events. This Industry Day serves to better inform the government, improve/enhance the design process, and may directly affect the resulting follow-on construction contract scope.

Fort Caroline memorializes the French colonists who came to North America during the 16th century seeking religious freedom, wealth, and territorial expansion. The current exhibit provides visitors with a representation of what the actual Fort is thought to look like. The actual Fort location is lost to history and no French and Spanish artifacts or features have been located. The location of the Fort Caroline exhibit in relation to the St. John’s River is highly vulnerable to storm surge, and frequent flooding from King tides.
